Breakfast at Tiffany's

1961 1 hr 55 min

Audrey Hepburn is unforgettable as free spirit Holly Golightly in this New York City romance based on a novella by Truman Capote. She flits from one party to another and falls in love with an aspiring writer - and then her past comes back to complicate everything. The drinking, the cigarette holder, the cat, the iconic Givenchy clothes and accessories - they’re all here. Plus a memorable score by Henry Mancini.

About the Fashion: Hepburn’s oversized glasses, little black dress, tiara, and statement pearl necklace play a starring role in what is perhaps the most stylish film of the 1960s. Hepburn was a brand ambassador before the term was ever created. Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn had a lifelong partnership, beginning with the 1954 film SABRINA, working together to achieve unforgettable style, on the big screen and in real life. The black evening dress Givenchy designed for the opening scene was deemed to be too revealing by the powers-that-be at Paramount Studios, so Edith Head was told to redesign it as the floor-length gown we see in the film. Head is credited merely as a Costume Supervisor on this film.

Warning to the Viewer: This film is a product of its time. It depicts racial prejudices that, unfortunately, were commonplace in American society at the time. These negative stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. The harmful depictions in this work do not represent the values of our nonprofit theater. We elected to present the film as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. We acknowledge the film’s harmful impact and hope it can serve as an educational tool to spark a conversation and raise awareness about the outdated cultural depictions in classic cinema with modern viewers.
